Maine Coon: The Most Beautiful Photos Of An Extraordinary Cat

  • The Maine Coon gets its name from the state of Maine in the USA.
  • Legend claims its a cross between a cat and a raccoon.
  • In reality, the Maine Coon is descended from Norwegian forest cats.
  • The Maine Coon arrived with the Vikings around the year 1000.
  • The Maine Coon is distinguished by its large size.

Native to Maine, the Maine Coon is one of the largest cat breeds in the United States. His very recognisable profile makes him one of the most popular cats in the world.

The origin of the Maine Coon has never been clearly established and many legends claim they made their arrival on the lands of Maine by the arrival of Vikings on the coasts, around the year 1000. This would explain in particular their resemblance to the cats of Norwegian forests. The Maine Coon, however, owes its name to a much more wacky legend, which claims it is the cross between a cat and a racoon. Such a creature obviously cannot really exist.

What distinguishes the Maine Coon from other cats is of course its size, which can reach a hundred centimetres. Males can weigh up to 9 kilos. The Maine Coon has a very square snout and dense fur, but uneven length on the different parts of the body. The ears are large and not particularly pointed, but very often have small tufts of hair at the ends, called plumes.

As with any cat, the character of the Maine Coon varies with each individual cat and its environment. As a rule, he is relatively sociable and can get on well with children.
