Emmanuel Macron: Who is Laurent, the President's brother?

While Emmanuel Macron opted for a career in politics, his brother Laurent decided to go into medicine. A discreet man who had already shown himself to be at the side of the President.

French President Emmanuel Macron makes the front pages of newspapers and radio almost daily. At the time of writing this article, Macron is in the middle of a political storm. After seeing the results of the European parliamentary election that took place on 9 June 2024, he decided to dissolve the National Assembly, the lower house of the French Parliament. A move that took everyone by surprise and that means the French will vote again at the end of the month, this time in parliamentary elections.

Emmanuel Macron is a public figure with a high media profile which is not the case for his discreet family. For instance, Laurent Macron, the Head of State's brother, has chosen a quiet life far from the spotlight and stress of the political world. However, during Joe Biden's June 2024 visit, Laurent is making headlines. Here's why.

Laurent, Emmanuel Macron's radiologist brother

While Emmanuel Macron and his wife Brigitte are well-known figures who regularly make the headlines, the President's family is more low-key . His brother Laurent was born in June 1979, two years after the head of state. According to French tabloid Public, he chose to study medicine, specialising in cardiac radiology.

They were both born in the French region of Picardy, more specifically in a city called Amiens. Laurent Macron is married to wife Sabine, and has three children, including twins Louis and Margaux, and daughter, Romane.

A striking resemblance between the Macron brothers

While the current President of the French Republic and his brother live very different lives, Laurent is back in the spotlight in June 2024. Indeed, he attended a State Dinner at the Elysée, the French Presidential Palace. Their sister Estelle, on the other hand, did not attend the special event.

While on red carpet with his wife, Laurent Macron got the attention of photographers because of his striking resemblance to the President. French publication Gala, which often covers high-profile events at the Elysée, highlights that the two men share 'the same sharp eyes, the same strong jawline, the same mischievous smile'.

Already back in April 2019, when Laurent Macron joined the Head of State in the stands of the Stade de France to watch the French Cup final between Paris Saint-Germain and Stade Rennais, photos taken during the game show Laurent and Emmanuel Macron share a certain complicity. Smiles and a relaxed attitude as well as a great physical resemblance can be seen in the images taken.

During their student years, the two brothers shared an apartment together in Paris. French tabloid Closer reported in 2019 that during their student years, the two men were at odds - Emmanuel was serious about his studies, while Laurent took full advantage of Parisian life.
