On 4 September 2023, the GB News presenter chose to talk about himself and gave a very worrying health update. Holmes shared a statement explaining that he’s ‘not good’ at the moment. The 63-year-old has experienced various health issues in his life and opened up about his most recent struggles, which have been ongoing since 2021. The update came after the presenter was seen at Wembley Stadiumin a wheelchair.

Now, in May 2024, it seems like the man's health issues are still ongoing.

Eamonn Holmes' back issues

Before Eamonn Holmes' September 2023 revelations, the presenter had previously explained that he had been experiencing back pain since 2021 when it started randomly. Due to his pain, Holmes started using a walking stick.

It turned out that Holmes’ pain was due to three slipped discs which affected his movement in his right leg, hence the need for a walking stick. In December 2021, he told The Sun that he was struggling and that it had had a huge impact on his family as he was unable to do everyday tasks:

It's been a difficult year. For months now I haven’t been able to walk, sometimes at all, and it has really taken its toll on everyone around me too...
I can’t bend down to pick things up so Ruth ends up having to wait on me, and I know my sons particularly are a bit embarrassed by the way I move around.

Eamonn Holmes underwent surgery

In May of 2022, Eamonn Holmes was scheduled for emergency surgeryin Belfast after his back issues caused him to have bladder and bowel issues. However, as reported by Daily Mail, the surgery was cancelled last minute after the surgeon deemed the situation ‘too complicated’.

Holmes stayed in hospital for 9 days and was monitored closely and was then allowed to fly back to England, where he had a jam-packed schedule, including the live coverage of Queen Elizabeth’s funeral in September.

Eamonn then decided to contact a specialist surgeon and finally underwent the surgery needed to help his back pain in September 2022.

It went well — the doctor tidied things up, and generally the pain has gone, which is brilliant

Despite the surgery going well, the GB News host was left with a very weakened left leg. To make matters worse, just two weeks after his surgery, Eamonn fell backwards down 18 stairs at his home and hit the stone floor at the bottom, as reported by Daily Mail.

As a result of his fall, Eamonn broke his shoulder and both of his legs were further weakened.

Eamonn Holmes' recovery

In a conversation with Tim Franklin in early September 2023, Eamonn Holmes revealed that he had been struggling to recover from both the spinal surgery he underwent in September 2022 and the horrific fall that followed, as reported by Daily Mail.

He said:

I can't run, I can't walk, I can't do anything except watch TV and eat
I just got problems last year in my back, which I haven't recovered from. It's not good, it's not a good recipe I have to say.

On 19 September 2023, Eamonn shared an update on his recovery in a new interview in which he said he was trying his best to get his health back on track. He told Best Magazine:

Well, I can walk if that’s what you mean (50 steps, to be exact) but I now accept life is easier with help from others. Getting around with crutches is exhausting. I wish I could walk further but, for now, I can’t.'

He said that asking for help form other people has not been easy as he feels helpless, but also 'grateful'. He added:

However, it’s truly draining when you have to say, "do you mind? Could you...? Thank you, I’m sorry." The good news is the op last year cured me of my back pain…I lost full mobility. I’m doing everything I can to get better. But it’s slow.

May 2024, Holme's health issues continue

On 18 May 2024, Express published an article in which they report that the presenter is 'bravely taking part in painful physio sessions' and so, 'almost every day'. This report came after Holmes was spotted in London.

The tabloid explains that the GB News anchor 'showed signs of frustration' as he was getting helped entering and exiting a building. Moreover, Express says that though he went in using 'sticks', he left 'using a wheelchair'.

A source allegedly close to Eamonn Holmes told Express:

Eamonn has been using walking aids for around 18 months now so not much has changed unfortunately. He is doing everything he can but the lack of progress from the physio has obviously been a bit frustrating.

The same source added that the presenter is 'in pain a lot of the time'.
