How does the Coital Alignment Technique work?

One of the main reasons that the missionary position is so popular is because of the close contact it allows between partners. It takes almost no effort to improve the effectiveness of this position. The man only has to position himself a little higher than his partner, so that the base of the penis rubs against the clitoris. Basically, the partner on top needs to align their chest with the bottom partner's shoulders. This will reduce space between the genitals and create more clitoral friction, hopefully leading to orgasm. This position can even be reversed! This slightly different technique places the person being penetrated on top, but instead of moving a few inches up, move down. Remember the position is all about genital to genital contact.

This position was designed with heterosexual sex in mind, but don't let that stop you from trying it! Coital Alignment can also be achieved by using a heightened position for a dildo or a strap on when it comes to sex between two partners with vaginas.

A logical explanation

According to a study published in the Journal of Sex and Marital Therapy, of the women who can’t orgasm with just doing missionary, 56% had more success with version 2.0. How can this be explained? Well according to Megan Fleming, psychologist and sexologist:

Roughly 2/3 of women don’t reach orgasm with penetration alone. CAT offers direct pressure and rocking and grinding that gives women additional clitoral stimulation

An eight-week study, which was conducted back in 1995 showed that many women who used the CAT method experienced an increase in orgasms from missionary. The technique also helps to curb premature ejaculation. This is because Coital Alignment isn't so much about penetration and by focusing on the feeling, the mid becomes less fixated on thrusting so both partners can experience prolonged intercourse.
