Cats sleep a lot and do not like to be disturbed. For this reason, sometimes owners can be under the impression that their loveable furball can be left alone for several days. Even though the feline is independent, it needs attention and cannot be left alone for too long.

Cats are independent animals

Cats are no doubt one of the most popular domesticated animals on the planet; with their little face and soft fur, they have managed to conquer the hearts of humans everywhere. Nevertheless, cats tend to be capricious and sometimes even completely ignore the presence of their owners.

Unlike dogs, cats are known to be very independent. The owner can leave for work without feeling guilty, like in some cases with dogs that are hyper affectionate and needy. While cats can be perfectly happyspending an entire day snoozing.

Although cats can be just fine for many hours without their owner, they should not be left alone for too long. A small feline accustomed to human contact may develop anxiety if left alone too often. Cats, which are known for having psychopathic tendencies, are a sensitive animal that can quickly become stressed without human company.

Cats need company

Cats are very good at being alone, as they can sleep up to 18 hours a day. This heavy sleeper needs a little peace and quiet as long as it has food, water and a clean litter box. However, according to experts at Animalpath.org, adult cats should not be left alone for more than 24 to 72 hours. Veterinarians at Columbia Veterinary Emergency explained that:

If you leave your cat alone for more than three days, you need to find someone to take care of it.

So it's best to get a pet sitter if you're planning a holiday or weekend getaway. This is especially true if your pet is injured or ill and needs to take medication.

Finally, it is not advisable to leave a newly adopted cat alone for a long period of time. The animal, which requires time to adapt, will be even more stressed if it has no company. It's important to monitor your cat's habits and see how it reacts in its new environment.
