How often should you clean your washing machine?

Most of the time the manual for your washing machine will tell you how often you should be cleaning the machine, it is always best to follow manufacturer recommendations. However, if you have lost the manual or it doesn't give cleaning instructions, you should clean your machine at least once a month depending on how often you use it.

You should also always clean out the gasket between each wash and leave the door and dispenser drawer open to avoid mold.

What do you need to clean your washing machine?

To clean your washing machine you can get a designated washing machine cleaner. These types of products have been specially designed to remove grease and grime without damaging your machine.

If you don’t want to go out and buy a special cleaner, you can always use bleach. Be careful when using bleach to clean your machine as if you use too much it will over-foam and damage the machine. So be sure to get the right dose.

Another simple and sustainable product you can use is white distilled vinegar. This option shouldn’t be used too frequently as it does erode rubber over time.

Please note that you should never mix bleach with vinegar as it creates a lethal chlorine gas.

  • Empty the drain hose

The first thing you’ll want to do is empty the drain hose. This is where water collects and it is important to empty every now and then. Before you drain the hose, you should unplug your machine for safety reasons. The hose is situated behind a panel at the bottom front of your machine.

Once you’ve located the hose, place some small towels on the floor to avoid getting water everywhere. Then get a bowl and unplug the hose and let the water drain. You may need to take a few trips to the sink before it empties out completely.

  • Clean the washing machine filter

Simply unscrew the filter until you can completely remove it from the machine. Once unscrewed, check the filter as well as the reservoir for any unwanted objects. To clean the filter itself, simply run it under hot water and if needed, scrub it with a toothbrush. Once cleaned, you can place the filter back in the machine.

  • Clean the rubber seal

The next step is to clean the door and the gasket. You can use a diluted solution of either bleach or white vinegar as mentioned above. This will get rid of the mould on the seal. If it is proving difficult to clean you can use a toothbrush to help. You can use the same solution to clean the inside of the door.

  • Clean the washing machine drawer

If you open the detergent drawer, you will notice a small latch that will allow you to completely remove it. Once you have removed the drawer, let it soak in hot soapy water and scrub away any left over detergent. Then rinse and dry the drawer before putting it back.

For the outside of the washing machine simply wipe it down with a damp microfibre cloth and go over everywhere.
