How often should you exfoliate?

On average, humans lose around 500 million skin cells every day, which makes it easy for dead skin to build up pretty quickly. What becomes a hero at this point is your exfoliation game. Exfoliating helps you remove dead skin cells from your face and reduce the dullness of the skin. It also helps in improving your skin tone and getting rid of conditions like acne. Thus, it provides you the perfect glowing skin that you wish for.

While it’s an important step in your skincare regime, there is such a thing as too much and too little exfoliating. Too much exfoliation can not only make your skin dry but also rip off its natural oil and totally change the type and texture of your skin. Whereas too little would lead to damaged, dull and unhealthy skin. Usually, 2-3 times a week should suffice but, it largely depends on your skin type!

Dry or Sensitive Skin

People with this skin type should be careful about the products they use for exfoliating. Harsh products might irritate your skin and lead to further dryness or sensitivity. Thus, this skin type should exfoliate a maximum of once or twice a week with a gentle physical exfoliator, like one with rice powder and bamboo. This skin type can also use a chemical exfoliator.

Oily or Acne-Prone Skin

People with oily skin might think it is okay to exfoliate every day or every other day, but that is a mistake. Oily or acne-prone skin people should exfoliate a maximum of twice or thrice in a week to avoid ripping off the natural moisture of the skin. While a chemical exfoliator would work wonders for your skin type, you could also use a physical exfoliator to get rid of extra buildup.

Combination Skin

Having a combination skin makes it difficult to choose the correct number of times one should exfoliate. However, anything between two to three times a week should do. Considering how your skin feels in that particular week, you can decide easily. People with combination skin can use either chemical or physical exfoliators.

Mature Skin

People with mature skin should exfoliate twice a week and probably with a chemical exfoliator. However, if your skin shows signs of irritation, switch to once a week or take a closer look at the ingredients of your scrub. Make sure to use a chemical exfoliator for better results.
