The warm home discount applies to bills in the 2022-2023 winter period and is one of several Government schemes rolled out for the winter months. This will come as a relief to many as energy costs spiral and the cost-of-living crisis continues to bite.

The money is not paid to you directly but instead is given as a discount directly on your bill between October and March. The payment last year was £140 but has risen this year to £150

Eligibility

People will qualify for the discount if, according to GOV.UK,

  • You get the Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit - known as the ‘core group’
  • You’re on a low income and meet your energy supplier’s criteria for the scheme - known as the ‘broader group’

It is also still possible to qualify if you’re using a pre-pay or pay-as-you-go meter. Your supplier will tell you if you’re eligible. It may be possible as well to get the discount on your gas bill instead if your supplier provides you with both gas and electricity.

People are urged to double check their eligibility, as applying for any sort of benefits could mean you qualify.

How to apply

If you qualify due to receiving the Guarantee Credit element of Pension credit you will get the discount automatically so you don’t need to do anything. Otherwise, you need to apply to your supplier. The i reports,

It is usually on a first come, first served basis which means those interested should apply to their supplier soon.

The Warm Home Discount Regulation was established in 2011 and the Government has decided to extend the scheme further, until 2026.

Other discounts and schemes you can apply for include:

Winter Fuel Payment:

If you were born on or before 25 September 1956 you might be eligible for between £250 and £600 to assist with your heating bills.

Cold Weather Payment:

If the average temperature in your area is, or forecast to be, zero degrees or below for 7 consecutive days you qualify for this payment. You will receive £25 for each 7 day period of very cold weather between 1 November and 31 March.

Household Support Fund:

Local authorities will have discretion on how this £421 million fund is spent but it is expected to go to those most in need. This is likely to be for pensioners and those with children who are struggling with their bills this winter.
