Boris Johnson to resign, here's who could replace him

It has just been announced that Boris Johnson will be forced to resign. After a turbulent mandate, who could replace the Tory Prime Minister?

It has been a wild week in the Houses of Parliament. A number of Tory MPs have resigned after it has come out that Boris Johnson knew about the allegations made against former Deputy Chief Whip Chris Pincher, despite him saying he was unaware of this when he appointed him.

As reported by Sky News, aNo 10 spokesman said:

The prime minister will make a statement to the country today.

Who could replace Boris Johnson?

As the Prime Minister is resigning, the new leader of the government won’t be appointed through a General Election. As reported by The Washington Post, here are a couple of potential MPs that could take his place, according to betting shops.

Rishi Sunak

According to Time, Rishi Sunak is a hot favourite to become the next British Prime Minister. Sunak was the Finance Minister. His popularity decreased slightly as the public believed he was slow to react to the cost of living crisis.

Although the fact that he quickly resigned when the news about Johnson came out shows Sunak's loyalty lies with his party and not Johnson.

Penny Mordaunt

The next favourite to be the next Prime Minister is Penny Mordaunt. She doesn’t have a position in the Cabinet but was the Defense Secretary. She was one of the most vocal when the whole ‘partygate’ scandal came out.

According to Time, Mordaunt is currently an international trade minister and the only female lawmaker who is in the Royal Navy reserves.
