Anyone with a pet should read this urgent message, animal welfare organisation pleads

Oh!MyMag has recently reported on lonely Big Patch who struggles to find a forever home, he was neglected and kept locked up by his previous owner. These tiny vulnerable puppies were less than a week old when they were heartlessly dumped. This extremely emaciated mama dog was abandoned in a forest and found whimpering in the cold.

As the consequences of the cost of living crisisaffect more and more families across the UK, animal rescue centres struggle to contain the abandonment epidemics and reportedly reach the ‘crisis point’.

With the RSPCA facing skyrocketing bills and a significant drop in rehoming, the charity has an urgent message to all pet owners.

Don’t suffer in silence and reach out for support

The RSPCA urges families with animals who face hardship across the country to ‘not suffer in silence’ and ‘reach out’ to charities and vets for support, whether financial or emotional.

Pet expert Jane Tyson said:

Don't struggle on your own, there are payment plans with vets, we have pet food banks, and it's well worth reaching out to organisations in your area.

The organisation believes that if people can’t cope with looking after their pets, neglect sets in, and caring for those overlooked animals is much harder.

The charity pleads with people to never abandon their furry family members.

Explore all the options to care for your pet for less

Many pet owners will have to choose between their own nutritious meals and making sure their pets have their basic needs covered this winter. But before you take the heartbreaking decision to let your pet go, make sure you explore all the options to spend less money on pet care.

Do research before getting a pet

The RSPCA believes that the Covid-19 pandemic and the lockdown created a lot of misconceptions about smaller pets, such as rabbits and guinea pigs, with people ignoring the fact that they are quite complex animals with specific needs. The charity also saw a rise in abandoned dogs, especially larger breeds with challenging behavioural issues.

Lack of thorough research led to those animals breeding quickly in hands of inexperienced people and being dumped afterwards.

The charity advises:

If you are thinking about getting a pet, do your research first. It's not just financial but you have to give time as well and care for the rest of their lives.
We are stretched definitely and breaking ourselves for more. We are getting more calls, every day our waiting lists are growing and it's becoming a very difficult situation.
