Celebrities who have been struggling with their health

Amy Dowden’s life has always revolved around the spotlight. From the age of eight—her earliest memory of disco competitions under Cornwall’s holiday lights—she’s been driven by the buzz of performance. That drive took her all the way to Strictly Come Dancing in 2017, sparkling on BBC screens and capturing hearts with every step. But in early 2023, everything changed: at just 35, Amy was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer. The glamorous costumes and contest nerves were suddenly replaced by chemotherapy chairs, medical charts, and a daunting fight for survival.

After several rounds of demanding treatment—chemotherapy, a mastectomy and ongoing hormone therapy—she finally announced in March 2024 there was “no evidence of disease.” Yet, the scars ran deeper than any hospital report. Amy’s healing extended beyond her body:

“After I finished chemo, I struggled to even walk up the stairs. When you've had something taken away from you, you appreciate it even more. It gave me the confidence I needed and last year, I realised Amy's back. Cancer wasn't going to take dancing away from me.”

That fightback now powers not only her steps, but her message to others fighting the same battle.

Back on the dance floor: resilience, risk and rebirth

After returning to Strictly in September 2025 for the new series, Amy’s comeback was more than just a TV spectacle. Partnered with Thomas Skinner, she may have been the first duo to exit—but her presence was deeply symbolic. People across the UK, especially those facing illness, saw her journey as a beacon of hope.

“So many people have written to me saying, 'I've been able to tell my little girl that Mummy's not well, but look at Amy – she's back dancing on Strictly again.' And that means so much to me. I've been on that other side, that daughter who has watched their mum go through it. I know how that felt.”

Amy’s health journey couldn’t be captured in one single comeback: a precautionary second mastectomy followed in November 2025, reminding her—and her growing community—that closure is gradual, sometimes unpredictable. With partner Ben Jones, whom she married in 2022, fertility became a concern; five embryos are now banked, their family hopes preserved amidst the uncertainty of menopause brought on by her treatments. Amy admits she’s unsure if she’ll ever carry a child herself, a deeply personal struggle she faces with trademark honesty.

“Reborn”: a tour fuelled by friendship and shared battles

Just as Amy refused to let cancer close the curtain on her career, she’s channelled her experience into a creative force. Her partnership with Carlos Gu—who joined Strictly in 2022 and claimed the Glitterball trophy with Karen Carney in 2025—blossomed into a brother-sister-like bond. Amy credits Carlos’s steadfast support during her darkest hours:

“Carlos cares deeply and when I've been ill, he's been there in the ambulance with me... It's like a brother and sister relationship.”

The pair’s much-anticipated “Reborn” tour kicks off nationwide on 30 May 2026.

“It's a real celebration of everything we've overcome and how we feel reborn in the last few years. We dig deep into everything we've been through, but also how dance has been our saviour. It's emotional but uplifting, and hopefully it leaves people feeling inspired.”

For Carlos, the tour also mirrors his own battles, including challenges around being LGBTQ in China—“Being LGBTQ isn't easy in China”—and his aspirations for the West End.

Inspiring others: vulnerability, honesty and new chapters

Amy’s willingness to reveal her vulnerabilities on national platforms has set her apart. Opening up about daunting moments—both health-related and personal—she’s crafted a role that extends beyond dance.

“Sometimes sharing yourself at your most vulnerable is not easy, but I also want to show the reality and try to help others.”

With each step back onto the dance floor, Amy reminds fans facing adversity that even the darkest chapters can lead to brighter beginnings.

As “Reborn” readies to lift the curtain, Amy stands as proof that setbacks don’t need to steal dreams.

“I can finally see a future ahead of me.”

For anyone searching for hope, her story is more than inspiration—it’s an invitation to believe in new beginnings, no matter the detour.
