The atmosphere has been anything but ordinary for Kate Ferdinand and her loved ones. Settled in the UAE since last year alongside her husband Rio Ferdinand and their children, Kate is used to sharing snippets of her celebrity lifestyle with fans. But this time, her message struck a far more serious tone. Over the weekend, the region was rattled by escalating conflict: on Saturday, Israel and the United States launched attacks against Iran, prompting Iran to retaliate with ballistic missiles and drones targeting several countries, including the UAE. This led to widespread concern, with military action reported not just over Israel, but also over Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, Jordan and the Emirates themselves.

Family nights move to the basement
For Kate, who is 34, and Rio, now 47, the events became terrifyingly real. Married for six years, the couple were forced to adapt rapidly as tensions flared around them. Posting a candid update on Sunday, Kate apologised for her silence and explained she had found it hard to put her experience into words. She reassured her followers and fans, saying her family remained safe, but revealed that they had spent the previous night seeking protection in the basement of their Dubai home. Her words did little to hide how shaken she felt:
“We are safe. The government are doing an incredible job to keep it that way, and despite my nerves, I feel like we’re in very good hands.”
“Very scary” night and the children’s perspective
The mood in the Ferdinand household swung between anxiety and moments of unexpected lightness. Kate recounted how her children, Cree and Shae, seemed to find a sense of adventure in the situation:
“We’re hoping for a quieter night tonight. Last night was very scary. Although Cree and Shae loved it because they couldn’t believe we all had a sleepover in the basement.”
Her honesty about the “very scary” ordeal, paired with the innocent excitement of her children, reveals just how surreal such moments become for families suddenly faced with real danger.
Other well-known faces in Dubai responded to the crisis. Laura Anderson, who had only just arrived with her daughter Bonnie, posted on Instagram, “Horrible situation, Bonnie and I are safe,” giving a voice to the general sense of worry. Luisa Zissman described ushering her children underground and watched the chaos unfold from her garden. Meanwhile, the new husband of Katie Price, another Dubai resident, was seen minimising fears on his social channels—each celebrity giving followers their own perspective, from reassurance to understated response.
The reality for expat families in conflict zones
The suddenly volatile climate left many expats and celebrities grappling with new anxieties. Messages flooded Kate’s inbox, prompting her to express gratitude and reflect on the emotional toll:
“Thank you for all your prayers. This whole experience is very eye-opening, and I’m praying for all involved. Much love to everyone.”
The message struck a chord with many who rarely see stars speak so openly about their fears. Kate highlighted the safety efforts in place and made clear that the government’s response gave her reassurance in an otherwise unpredictable week.
