‘When you go Home, tell them of us and say, For your Tomorrow, we gave our Today.' Members of the Royal Family joined faith leaders, political leaders, veterans and serving members of the Armed Forces who gathered at the Cenotaph on Whitehall this morning to remember those who have lost their lives in conflict. The word cenotaph means ‘empty tomb’ and it symbolises the unprecedented losses suffered during the First World War. The Cenotaph was unveiled by King George V on 11 November 1920 at the same ceremony which saw the Unknown Warrior laid to rest. Initially intended as a temporary structure, the Cenotaph was made permanent after the British people, still grieving for the huge losses of the First World War, took the monument to their hearts. 📸 Press Association

On the balcony overlooking the Cenotaph, the Duchess of Cambridge was photographed in a very sober and simple outfit. Black was the order of the day at this commemorative event, so George, Charlotte and Louis' mother opted for a long, officer-style coat.

To accessorise it, she went for a jewel brooch pinned to her chest. It was red in colour and represented the poppy that is associated in the Commonwealth with the memory of those who died in war.

When it came to her hair she opted for a large braided bun. This very voluminous hairstyle perfectly highlighted Prince William's wife's new hair colour. For earrings, she wore a pair on loan from Elizabeth II, which to herself had been given by the King of Bahrain in 1947.

To accessorise this very sober look, Kate Middleton opted for a black bibi hat with a fishnet veil in front of her eyes.

Despite her serious air considering the circumstances, the Duchess of Cambridge was nonetheless looking sublime.
