Superfoods are all the rage right now, and rightfully so. These foods give you the nutrients you need to live a healthy, balanced life. Ignore the hype, trust the experts, go to your nearest grocery store, and stock up on these superfoods today!

Eat your greens

There’s a reason why our parents have been trying so hard to get us to eat our leafy greens. They’re packed with many amazing nutrients, like fibre, zinc, calcium, iron and magnesium, that have the potential to protect you against chronic illnesses like diabetes. You can get all of that goodness by eating greens like spinach and kale. Blend up a smoothie, or cook up some soup. Make it however you like, but do not neglect your greens because the benefits are plenty.

Find fermented foods

Not everyone is used to eating fermented foods because oftentimes it tastes rather peculiar. But, they are loaded with good bacteria, aka probiotics. You’re probably already familiar with many fermented products like yogurt, kombucha and pickles! Foods rich in probiotics have many health benefits. It helps reduce cholesterol and improve digestion. Another great food that has a high level of probiotics is kimchi.

Stock up on some seeds and nuts

Have you seen people putting all kinds of seeds and nuts into their yogurts? You should start doing it too. Nuts and seeds are an easy way of getting fibre, protein and heart-healthy fats.

Chia and hemp seeds are two of the most popular at the moment. Chia seeds pack a punch because they’re filled with nutrients like fibre, protein and calcium, plus they’re low in calories. Whereas hemp seeds have omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids that are known to improve the health of your heart.

There is a long list of superfoods that you should include in your diet, so do your research and find what works best for you. Here are some other options to consider the next time you’re in thesupermarket:

  • Berries: High in fibre, vitamin C and antioxidants. The antioxidants in berries can reduce your risk of heart disease and cancer.
  • Green tea: Abundant in natural antioxidants and polyphenolic compounds that helps with inflammation.
  • Avocado: Contains many vitamins, minerals and healthy fats that might decrease your chance of getting diabetes, cancer and heart disease.
  • Sweet potato: Loaded with potassium, fibre and vitamins. Despite the sweetness, it has been found that they might help people with type-2 diabetes to control their blood sugar.
