Every now and then, experts inform us about things such as signs that your relationship won't last long or even what to ask yourself if you want your relationship to last. Apart from all this inward work, it can also help to have a better idea of the things that generally cause conflicts and anxieties in relationship, which could lead to divorce.

Luckily for us, a study by Forbes Advisor does just that. The study surveyed 1,000 Americans who are divorced or who are in the process of divorcing with the goal of understanding why marriages fail.

Main findings of the study

With 689,308 divorces occurring in the USA in 2021 alone, most couples filed for 'no faults' divorce, and cite irreconcilable differences as the cause for the end of the marriage.

But cheating in marriage does play a huge role, with 34% of the participants in the study stating that infidelity or an extra-marital affair was the reason their marriage ended.

Here are some other findings of the study as stated by Forbes Advisor:

Many of the divorces took place between the third and seventh year of marriage. Lack of compatibility is the top reason for new couples to divorce, with 59% of couples who divorced in their first year citing this as the cause.

Interestingly, 63% of divorcees stated that 'a better understanding of the commitments of marriage could have helped them to avoid divorce.'

Main reasons for conflicts in marriage

In general, the other reasons for getting a divorce were lack of family support, lack of compatibility, lack of intimacy, conflict and arguments as well as financial stress.

Seeing that differences or a lack of compatibility have been cited by so many couples as the death knell of their marriage, why these conflicts arise is definitely worth taking a look.

As per the study, these are the most common reason for conflicts experienced in divorced couples.

  1. Career choices
  2. Parenting differences
  3. Division of household labor
  4. Relationships with family
  5. Relationships with friends
  6. Finances
  7. Health choices
