Red flags are all the rage when it comes to determining whether or not you're in a healthy relationship. According to Mind Body Green, a red flag in dating refers to an early sign of an unhealthy relationship or problematic partner.

However, while noting red flags is important as it can help you avoid harmful situations, it can leave many feeling like a relationship pessimist. Thus enters the green flag...

What is a green flag?

As well as looking for signs things are going astray in a relationship, it is equally important to know what a healthy partnership looks like. A green flag, therefore, is a behaviour or quality of your partner that informs you that they will likely enter into and handle relationships (and more generally, life situations) in a healthy and mature manner.

What are some green flags I should look for?

A good relationship is not just the absence of bad qualities in your partner but the presence of habits that show healthy intentions. Here are a few important green flags to watch out for:

Honest communication

Being honest with your partner is a major green flag. Avoiding even white lies to be honest with a partner shows the prioritisation of a healthy relationship over personal comfort. (Just be careful not to weaponise the truth or overshare to intentionally hurt a partner).

Prioritising (personal) growth

Reflecting on your personal as well as relationship goals is a good sign your partner wants the best for themselves and their relationship. Committing to growth, even when it is uncomfortable, such as finding a way to resolve conflict, not only shows maturity but that you and your partner are on the same team.

Emotional validation

Being able to express your emotions without fear of judgement also qualifies a green flag. Healthy communication never looks like being told that you are too much or that your feelings are too dramatic (this is gaslighting). Instead, in a secure relationship, both partners should be able to discuss their emotions freely while the other listens, empathises, and helps you feel understood.
