“Surrounded by love” Mel Schilling’s moving legacy after her brave battle

Television has lost one of its brightest personalities as Mel Schilling, memorable panel expert on Married At First Sight, has died aged 54. Her story of courage, warmth and family endures, leaving fans and friends deeply touched by her final days.

Mel Schilling’s journey came to a peaceful end, “surrounded by love”, just as her husband Gareth described. The much-loved marriage expert and reality TV matriarch passed away on 24 March 2026, closing a chapter marked by both professional milestones and a fierce, hopeful fight against illness. A fixture on Married At First Sight since 2016, Mel shaped love stories on screen, but her most powerful story was her real life: one of resilience, honesty and devotion to her family.

A TV icon’s bravery beyond the screen

Mel’s cancer diagnosis arrived in December 2023. She was open with the public: her colon cancer treatments, sixteen rounds of chemotherapy and radiotherapy, were undertaken while she carried on supporting MAFS contestants and viewers for a twelfth season. In March 2026, Mel revealed that her cancer had spread, including to the left side of her brain, and that doctors had “nothing further” to offer as treatment. Gareth wrote:

“This is a woman who became a new mum and a TV star at 42 — and nailed both. This is a woman who, through two years of chemotherapy, when she could barely lift her head from the pillow, never complained and never stopped showing courage, grace, compassion and empathy, and never missed a day of filming.”

Her unwavering commitment to both her craft and her loved ones stands as a testament to her character.

Personal tributes highlight Mel’s lasting impact

Gareth, her husband, announced her death with words resonating across social media and the world of television:

“Melanie Jane Brisbane-Schilling passed away peacefully today, surrounded by love.”

He reflected on their “15 wonderful years” together.

“To most of you, she was Mel Schilling — matriarch of MAFS and queen of reality TV. To Maddie and me, she was our wee Melsie: an incredible mum, role model, and soulmate.”

Their daughter Maddie was at the heart of these tributes. Gareth’s honesty about grief and admiration was palpable:

“Life can be beautiful, and life can be incredibly cruel. But ultimately, life is fleeting, fragile, and tomorrow is promised to no one. If you can do anything to honour Mel, please live life to the full, love your people well, and try not to sweat the small stuff.”

Expressions of sorrow and respect poured in from colleagues and friends. In a statement, Channel 4 said:

“All of us at Channel 4 are incredibly saddened by the news of Mel’s death. Our thoughts and condolences are, first and foremost, with her family and loved ones.”

They added:

“We’re privileged to be the channel that is home to Mel’s work, which was at the heart of Married At First Sight’s phenomenal success, both in the UK and Australia.”

Colleagues remembered her positivity, with Channel 4 noting:

“For many who work for Channel 4, Mel was not just a colleague but a friend, someone who radiated joy, warmth and optimism, who energized every room she walked into, with humour and positivity.”

The Married At First Sight family mourns their matriarch

For twelve seasons, Mel offered advice and support to couples searching for love on MAFS. She had decided to step back from the Australian version after these twelve seasons. Her presence, wisdom and big-hearted style left a lasting imprint not only on viewers but also on her fellow experts, including John, Alessandra and Charlene, and on those behind the scenes. The MAFS community, alongside friends, like Elizabeth Day and her industry team, are left reflecting on the depth of loss, while celebrating Mel’s life and what she stood for every day, both on-screen and at home. As Gareth’s words remind everyone:

“I had 15 wonderful years with my soulmate, and it was the privilege of my life to be by her side. For that, I will be forever thankful. Goodbye, my love. My one. Until we meet again.”
