Break ups can be very painful. One minute this particular person was your rock and your world, and the next minute they become strangers or probably just a distant memory. Some people may be accustomed to letting their exes go immediately after they separate, but for others it is easier said than done.

The circumstances surrounding the break up may also determine why some leave their exes faster than others. For example, if a person was in an abusive relationship and their partner was emotionally manipulative, they may often not want to have anything more to do with the ex. However, in certain situations, the relationship did not just work out due to ‘irreconcilable differences.’

Does love conquer hurt?

The scars from a breakup can run deep for months and sometimes years, but some people are able to look beyond the situation and still become friends. How is this possible?

The reason is because they have both healed from the situation, and they choose to be mature in accepting that the person they once loved has the right to date other people too. If the relationship was genuinely founded on friendship then there is a great possibility that you can still be friends with your ex.

Mutual respect

For friendship to work with an ex, there has to be mutual respect between the two parties involved. That means no bitterness or malice should still be kept after separation. It may seem hard, but it is possible. There should be no reason to slander each other, especially online. Some exes who remain friends may actually end up together while others stay platonic friends for life. It’s all about how they perceive the person they were once completely smitten with.

There is no hard and fast rule to this, if you think you can be able to work things out with your ex and become friends without being jealous or having malice, then it is definitely worth the shot. However, if you don’t want to have anything to do with this person in order to protect your heart, then by all means do that.
