'It's not that I want to meet him, it's that I have to meet him'

In an effort to pull through for his country, the president of Ukraine will stop at nothing to end the war and save the lives of millions of Ukrainians. This includes having to meet with the man who started the turmoil himself, Vladimir Putin. During a news conference at a metro station in Kyiv, the President of Ukraine said:

I think that whoever started this war will be able to end it. From the beginning, I have insisted on talks with the Russian president. It’s not that I want [to meet him], it’s that I have to meet him so as to settle this conflict by diplomatic means. We have confidence in our partners, but we have no confidence in Russia.

Interestingly, Zelenskyy made it known that he has already tried to initiate dialogue with Putin but to no avail. In the same conference, Zelenskyy revealed that Ukraine will be receiving more ammunition in an effort to fight back and recover their stolen territory. He believes that fighting back is the best way to defend his country. He explained:

As soon as we have [more weapons], as soon as there are enough of them, believe me, we will immediately retake this or that territory, which is temporarily occupied.

Will they cross paths at the G20 summit?

It may not take too long for the two to meet as both leaders have been invited to attend the climate summit to be held on Bali Island, in Indonesia this year. In a phone call with Indonesian President, Joko Widodo, Putin confirmed that he will, indeed, be attending. Zelenskyy, on the other hand, has acknowledged the invitation but has yet to confirm or decline officially.
