A TikToker @jenniabs has just shown people on the Internet the real reason why potato peeler blade swivels, and according to her, it has to do with knowing how to actually use your potato peeler.
The actual way to use a potato peeler
In her video, the TikTok creator shows how the swivelling blades of a potato peeler that moves around, is because you can not only peel a potato by dragging the blade downward, but you can also bring it upward such that you can peel the potato both forward and then backward in one continuous fluid motion.
Thus, you can peel off an entire potato super-fast, without having to lift your peeler off of the potato.
@jenniabs says in her video,
The reason why potato peeler swivel back and forth is that you can not only go down but forward when you’re peeling so that you can peel the entire thing super fast.

Needless to say, the video left most viewers shocked and stunned.
One shocked comment reads,

There were also viewers who were not convinced about this method of peeling potatoes. One viewer warned others saying,
Uuuhhh no. You should never peel anything towards your body. That’s the first thing they teach you in any cooking class!
Another person gave a reason which they claim is the real reason why the potato peeler is designed that way. They state,
Potato peeler swivel back-and-forth because some people are left-handed and some people are right handed that's the reason!
One viewer had a pragmatic point about the issue, saying kitchen gadgets should also come with instructions on how to use them. They state,
I feel like they should start including instructions with this stuff….im not going to read them but the option to read should be there just in case
