You might want to keep this in mind the next time you order pizza

This is THE debate that has shocked internet users at the beginning of 2019. What’s better: ordering two small pizzas or one big one?

After the many debates online, such as the one about what colour the dress was (blue and black or white and gold), there is now a new question that is dividing internet users. And it’s about… pizza. It all started with a tweet from Fermat’s Library’s Twitter account, that suggested a mathematical calculation for the size of the Ninja Turtles’ favourite meal. See, math is important!

This message received 1,200 responses and was retweeted more than 20,000 times in just a few hours alone, proof that everyone is interested in this debate. According to this tweet, it’s better to order one 18-inch pizza instead of ordering two pizzas measuring 12 inches each. Do you agree?

A very precise mathematical calculation

At first, the result looks quite surprising, but there is a precise calculation that backs up this idea. An 18-inch pizza has a surface area of 0.16 metres squared, whilst two pizzas measuring 12 inches have a surface area of just 0.14 metres squared. We’ll spare you the maths behind it since it’s enough to make your head spin.

After this result was posted, lots of Twitter users reacted in some quite weird and wonderful ways.

Lots of reactions

One Twitter user wrote:

The crust is arguably the best part and two 12-inch pizzas have 33.3% more crust than an 18-inch pizza. And now I’m hungry, thanks @fermatslibrary!

Another user added:

The pizza industry has known this for years but kept their studies hidden. Thanks for speaking truth to power, Andy.

The argument was closed with this last comment:

Finally! I can now coherently explain to my 10-year-old why math is important in life: without math, you might unknowingly spend more for less pizza!

So now you know what you should do next time you order pizza. Order one big pizza instead of two little ones!
