Bad news for rice lovers. British researchers from the University of Manchester have just revealed via a study that in large doses, rice can be dangerous to one's health. Why is this the case? Quite simply because these small grains contain low levels of arsenic, a poison that could increase the risk of cardiovascular problems. The experts note:There is a significant association between high cardiovascular mortality and the consumption of inorganic rice containing arsenic. Those who consume the most rice have a 6% higher risk of dying from a cardiovascular problem than those who do not.Another frightening figure revealed by the British study indicates that ‘this situation is the cause of 50,000 deaths per year!' If you want to continue eating rice with less risk, experts recommend eating basmati rice or polished rice, which are ‘known to generally have lower levels of inorganic arsenic.’ Bon appétit!
