Kim Raisner was trying to assist German athlete Annika Schleu as she battled to control the horse for the modern pentathlon.
Before their round, athletes had only 20 minutes to bond with a new horse, and Schleu, who had been leading the field, was in tears as she entered the arena.
The International Modern Pentathlon Union said it reviewed footage showing:
Raisner appearing to strike the horse with her fist (and that) her actions were deemed to be in violation of (the rules).
In fact, Raisner was also heard yelling at Schleu to yank the reins tighter on the horse. Athleten Deutschland condemned the 'hostility and partly open hate' hurled towards Schleu on social media.
The rider was disqualified from the game and stricter measures were applied.
