Remi and her new owner Sian Spibey were brought together by ‘a twist of fate’ following the sudden passing of her dog, ironically also called Remi. But then, by another cruel twist of fate, the pup was diagnosed with a terminal illness. Not put off by the treatments and the imminent heartbreak of losing her new furry kid, the kindhearted woman vowed to ‘give her as much love as possible for as long as she has left’.

A twist of fate

In May this year, Sian spotted a Mirror article advertising a gorgeous rescue dog who desperately needed a forever home. The pooch was a six-year-old Dogue de Bordeaux called Remi, exactly like her own pet. Though Sian fell in love with her instantly, she knew the two dogs couldn’t live together.

Sadly, Sian's dog tragically died from a sudden heart attack just a few months later.

With a ‘dog-shaped hole in her heart’ the devastated woman reached out to Helping Yorkshire Poundies to offer Remi a forever homeMirror writes.

She said:

It felt like a twist of fate as if my Remi was telling me to save her.

🧡💕 REMI 💕🧡 has been taking it easy this afternoon lapping up all the attention she can get 💕 We’re waiting on some blood results for her, but it’s looking like it could be good news for Remi and not lymphoma 🤞💕🤞💕🤞 This girl is SO special - we’d love to get her into a home - she’s fed up in kennels 🥺 She is 6 years old, super friendly with people, and also dog friendly!! 🐶💕🧡 #doguedebordeaux #mastiff #gentlegiant

A tragic diagnosis

Sian spoke to her family and agreed to adopt the pooch. She was looking forward to giving her a forever home. But then the heartbreaking diagnosis came.

The vet had found incurable skin cancer and low-grade lymphoma in the pup’s body.

Most potential adopters are put-off by pets’ health complications, but not Sian. The grieving woman was prepared to have her heart shuttered once again to give love and care to Remi for the remainder of the poorly dog’s life.

Sian said:

It didn't put us off and we decided to bring her into our home, hearts and family.

‘She’s such a special girl’

Remi settled in well in her new home and despite the terrifying diagnosis, doesn't have symptoms. Treatment with steroids helps to keep her lymph nodes under control.

Sian is keeping an eye on the pup’s breathing, but rather than that she tries to make her life as comfortable as possible.

The owner commented:

She's such a special girl and has settled in so well.

According to Sian, Remi is a gentle and happy dog who loves sleeping and snuggling up on the sofa.
