A natural way to stimulate sleep

The board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Anthony Youn, explains that if you suffer from a mild form of insomnia, eating a spoonful of peanut butter right before hitting the sack could be a game changer. That's right, all it takes is a generous mouthful of your favourite peanut butter—whether the smooth and creamy stuff or the crunchy and more textured variety—to get you snoozing.

According to Youn, peanut butter will help decrease the amount of time it takes for you to fall asleep in virtue of the tryptophan it naturally contains.

What is tryptophan?

Tryptophan is an amino acid that is needed for children to properly grow as it helps the body maintain and produce protein, muscles, enzymes and neurotransmitters. It is an essential amino acid, which means that your body cannot organically produce it itself, but must instead be added through one's diet.

It is also used by the body to help make melatonin and serotonin. The latter is responsible for regulating appetite, sleep, mood and pain, while the former helps with one's sleep-wake cycle. As a result, it has been used as a natural dietary hypnotic, as it has been proven to treat mild insomnia by helping those who suffer from long sleep latency.
