The series was nominated under 25 categories, the highest number of nominations this year, and members of the team were seen happily frequenting the stage.

That awkward joke

Succession creator Jesse Armstrong, while accepting the 2022 Emmy Award for Outstanding Drama Series, took a subtle dig at King Charles III and the British monarchy using a rather awkward wordplay to explain the UK’s current transitional phase following the Queen’s death.

He was heard saying on stage that their win was a ‘big for successions in the U.K.’, before adding even more awkward analogies, such as:

Evidently, a bit more voting involved in our winning than Prince Charles.
I'm not saying we're more legitimate than that position—we'll leave that to other people. We are incredibly grateful to have this wonderful honor.

For the unversed, the 74th Emmys was held just four days after the death of Queen Elizabeth II, Armstrong’s unusual choice of words was about King Charles III’s latest role in the British Monarchy.

Talking about this ‘extraordinary’ win, Armstrong said:

‘It's a team effort, starting with the writers room, the producers who support us, the directors, my god, the extraordinary cast we are surrounded by, my goodness, our amazing crew. And HBO who protects and supports us, so many thanks.’

The aftereffect of inappropriate joke(s)

The audience sitting at the Emmys 2022 were not happy with his joke about the Royal Family at a time like this.

A source present in the room told E! News there were a lot of ‘wtfs’ and no one really laughed in the crowd.

‘It seemed most people felt it was in poor taste. It was just very awkward.’
