This cheese company is recalling some of its products due to the presence of bacteria that could cause illness.

Urgent recall issued over this food product due to contamination, here's what you need to know

The Old Cheese Room is recalling several of its artisanal soft cheese products due to the possible presence of Listeria monocytogenes in some batches of these items. The bacteria can cause illness and so customers are being warned not to eat the product.

The company has stated that the recall is just a 'precautionary measure' however listeria poisoning can cause serious problems for people with weakened immune systems, pregnant women or the elderly. Any customers who have bought the affected batches are advised to take it back for a full refund (with or without the receipt).

The Old Cheese Room products

The product batches affected are as follows:

Baronet Soft Cheese

  • Pack size 1kg
  • Best before 21 March 2023, 11 April 2023, 18 April 2023

Baby Baronet Soft Cheese

  • Pack size 200g
  • Best before 16 April 2023

Mini Baronet Soft Cheese

  • Pack size 270g
  • Best before 18 April 2023

The above items are all being recalled and point of sale notices will be displayed in-store where the products were sold explaining what to do if you have bought them.

Risk Statement

The Food Standards Agency has issued the following risk statement regarding this product recall, as per the FSA:

The presence of Listeria monocytogenes in some batches of the products listed above.
Symptoms caused by this organism can be similar to flu and include high temperature, muscle ache or pain, chills, feeling or being sick and diarrhoea. However, in rare cases, the infection can be more severe, causing serious complications, such as meningitis.
Some people are more vulnerable to listeria infections, including those over 65 years of age, pregnant women and their unborn babies, babies less than one month old and people with weakened immune systems.

Customers should check if they have bought one of the affected products by verifying the batch codes. Consumers are advised not to eat the product and to contact The Old Cheese Room for a full refund.
