Ever since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine which saw the relationship between the Kremlin and the West descend to a new low, both sides of the conflict are trying to get the upper hand by recruiting spies.

It wouldn’t come as a surprise if NATO countries, and the UK in particular, did the same in pursuit of getting more information about the ‘Russian threat’.

The latest verbal confrontation between Moscow and London saw Russian Foreign Affaires Ministry (MID) spokeswoman Maria Zakharova offer Brits to spy for Vladimir Putin.

In fact, her proposal mirrored the one made by the MI6 boss Sir Richard Moore to the Russian citizens who oppose the devastating war.

Russia has a proposal for Brits: spy for Vladimir Putin

Russian MID spokeswoman Maria Zakharova, famous for her anti-western rhetoric, proposed UK nationals and others from the ‘axis of evil’ NATO states to share Western secrets with the world-famous Russian security FSB formerly known as KGB.

The move came as a ‘furious clapback’ to the MI6 chief Sir Richard Moore, who has earlier suggested Russians who are unhappy with their President and his bloodthirsty invasion of Ukraine could help end it by betraying the Kremlin master.

Zakharova, who was upset with Moore’s offer, contributed to the further escalation between Moscow and London which already saw Russia threaten Britain with its nuclear arsenal.

She called his move a ‘Russophobic’ attack and likened it to Nazi propaganda.

MID mouthpiece said:

Such appeals should be addressed to British subjects and citizens of other countries of the Nato axis of evil, inviting them to cooperate with Russian intelligence.
I think it’s a good idea to offer UK nationals, most of whom are now in extremely straitened circumstances, a chance to cooperate with the Russian secret services.
Why not, what’s the big deal? Because London thinks it’s normal. I don’t see why we should deny ourselves that, so let’s wait and see.

Russians have been offered to spy for the West too

US foreign intelligence service posted a recruitment video for potential spies on Telegram, explaining how Russians could contact them.

The MI6 chief has also been eloquent in calling for those unhappy with Putin to join in, stressing ‘many Russians are wrestling with the same dilemmas and the same tugs of conscience’ as their predecessors did in 1968 when the Soviet tanks crushed the Prague Spring uprisings.

He said:

There are many Russians who are silently appalled by the sight of their armed forces pulverising Ukrainian cities, expelling innocent families from their homes and kidnapping thousands of children.
They are watching in horror as their soldiers ravage a kindred country.
They know in their hearts that Putin’s case for attacking a fellow Slavic nation is fraudulent, a miasma of lies and fantasy.
I invite them to do what others have already done this past 18 months and join hands with us. Our door is always open.

According to Moore, MI6 will ‘handle offers of help with discretion and professionalism’ while all the secrets ‘will always be safe’ with the service.

He expressed willingness to ‘work to bring the bloodshed to an end’.

Moore also revealed that ‘many’ Russian citizens had joined forces with MI6 over the last 18 months.
