Of all the Kremlin personalities Dmitry Medvedev, former President of Russia and currently the deputy chairman of the National Security Council, seems to have mastered it best and champions the ominous rhetoric whenever the situation on the frontline turns sour for Russia.

Although rumours are that Vladimir Putin's employees are badly impacted by the war fatigue, with heavy drinking having become a real problem amongst the politicians of all ranks, and that Medvedev often pens his Philippics to the West after he has engaged in the unhealthy habit, such serious threats as nuclear warcan’t be ignored.

As Ukraine has launched its counteroffensive and vowed to take Crimea back, the former President predicted ‘global nuclear fire’ if Kyiv succeeded. Here is what he said.

Here is what Vladimir Putin’s right hand said about the nuclear war

If Ukraine’s ongoing counteroffensive against Moscow’s invasion sees Kyiv take Russian territory, ‘there would simply be no other way out’ than using strategic nuclear weapons, Dmitry Medvedev warned in a social media post on Sunday.

He said:

Just imagine that the NATO-supported {Ukraine’s} offensive turned out successful, and they took away a part of our land: Then we would have to, following the president’s degree of 02.06.2020, use the nuclear weapon.

The original post referred to Ukraine as ‘ukrobanderovtsy’ - a term that Russians believe is offensive as it derives from the allegedly cruel methods used by the followers of Stepan Bandera, a nationalist leader who waged a campaign for Ukrainian independencefrom the Soviet Union in the 1930s and 1940s.

Medvedev wrote that if Crimea - the peninsula that was annexed by Russia after an internationally-unrecognised referendum in 2014 and is seen by Vladimir Putin as an integral part of Russian lands - was seized, there would be a nuclear war with the West.

Crimea is strategically important for Moscow as its waters don't freeze during the winter, allowing the port activities to continue all year.

Dmitry Medvedev dreams of ‘all things nuclear’

Dmitry Medvedev’s threats come as Ukraine is reportedly close to making a breakthrough after launching its long-anticipated counteroffensive in the south of the country.

Although Russian news channels insist it is failing, Medvedev’s post suggests the opposite.

He also wrote:

Our Armed Forces, repelling the counteroffensive of the collective enemy, protect the citizens of Russia and our land. This is obvious to all decent people. But beyond that, they prevent world conflict.
There is simply no other way out. Therefore, our enemies must pray for our warriors. They do not allow the global nuclear fire to flare up.

This is not the first and not even the second time Dmitry Medvedev dreams about all things nuclear.

He once suggested that the situation in Ukraine could be ‘brought to an end within a few days’ by doing what ‘the Americans did in 1945 when they deployed nuclear weapons and bombed two Japanese cities, Hiroshima and Nagasaki.’

During Wagner’s failed coup, he also said the rebellion could lead to a nuclear war.
