George W. Bush made this surprising mistake during his speech

This Wednesday 18 May, the former US presidentcommitted quite a blunder during his speech about the war in Ukraine and Vladimir Putin in Dallas, Texas.

Bush's slip of the tongue on the war in Ukraine

George W. Bush came to Dallas to give a speech and condemned the invasion of Ukraine by Russian military forces. However, the ex American President made a surprising slip of the tongue and got the wrong country. ABC Newsreported that he said

The result is an absence of checks and balances in Russia, and the decision of one man to launch a wholly unjustified and brutal invasion of Iraq,

He then quickly corrected his mistake and said

I mean, of Ukraine.

According to ABC News, the former US president then jokingly tried to justify his mistake by blaming his age, recalling that he was 75-years-old. The audience laughed and went along with the flow. Nevertheless, it was quite surprising when Bush went ahead and extended the humour by saying 'In Iraq too'. A joke that was welcomed by the laughter of an audience devoted to his cause.

As per the Business Insider in 2003, two years after the September 11 attacks, George W. Bush, then, President of the United States, decided to wage war in Iraq. Bush initiated an operation known as the ‘Operation Iraqi Freedom’ which was allegedly to help citizens of Iraq ‘achieve a united, stable and free country’.

Business Insider also reports that no weapons of mass destruction were found in Iraq. The war lasted 8 years, from 2003 to 2011. Nearly 5,000 soldiers and hundreds of thousands of civilians died.
