How much does it cost to have a fan on?

Research from moneytransfers.com tells us how much it costs to cool down our homes during a heatwave, as reported by Sky News.

While ceiling fans are not common in the UK, they are the most economical option for keeping cool during summer. Research has shown that they use 6p per day, adding only £1.80 to your energy bill per month.

The next most cost-effective option is a floor fan. An average 110w floor fan uses 2p of energy per hour, or 40p per day if it is on for 20 hours. This would cost an additional £12 per month.

The most expensive option is, of course, air conditioning. It will use 23p per hour, or £4.60 per day. This will increase your energy bill by a more substantial £138.

Other ways to cool down

They recommend opening your windows in the morning and the evening when it's cooler and keeping them shut, along with your curtains or blinds, during the day when it's warmest.
