We were all excited to finally get to see the new Love Island cast on screen last night—but imagine the surprise of seeing your PE teacher entering the villa. New Islander Hugo Hammond quit his job as a secondary school PE teacher in Devon to head to Majorca—but told his students he was leaving for a teaching job in London.

A number of teenagers claiming to be Hugo’s former pupils have taken to TikTok to share their reactions to the news. Several of them shared a screenshot of him teaching an at-home HIIT workout—presumably during one of last year’s COVID lockdowns.

One captioned their post:

When your A-level PE teacher lied about going to London but is now on Love Island...

While another wrote:

When you’re use to seeing your teacher around school and now you’re going to be watching him topless every night at 9pm.

Hugo Hammond’s Love Island lie

In fairness to Hugo, the Islanders are sworn to secrecy before appearing on the show, so he couldn’t really have told his students the truth about what he was going to be up to this summer. We also reckon it would have led to some pretty awkward conversations, so we don’t blame him for saying he was off to London instead.

Hugo Hammond

Speaking about his passion for teaching in pre-show interviews, 24-year-old Hugo said:

I teach secondary school PE. Absolutely love my job. I love all my sports. It’s great to be able to pass on that enthusiasm to be physically active to the younger generation and hopefully they feel the same about me teaching them.
