"It's not the show we've ended up with": Gemma Collins’ Life Changes Shape Her Docuseries

The release date for Gemma Collins’ hotly anticipated Sky docuseries has been confirmed—fans are counting down the days. What started as a glossy portrait of Britain’s queen of reality TV evolved into something far more raw and moving following a devastating personal loss.

Gemma Collins is trading in the glamour and memes for heart and honesty. With her eight-part documentary series set to launch on 15 September 2026, Collins promises viewers an unprecedented look behind the persona dubbed “the GC.” The new show offers exclusive access to her most difficult year yet, revealing sides of Gemma that only those closest to her have ever seen.

A New Kind of Reality: The True Gemma Collins

Originally greenlit in August 2025 by the production company Navybee, the documentary was meant to showcase Collins’ journey through love, IVF struggles, ambitions to be a mum, and daily life away from the spotlight. But as executive producer Philip Edgar-Jones from Sky revealed at the Edinburgh TV Festival, reality had different plans.

“There's a wonderful show coming out with Gemma Collins. She's a character that really resonates with a specific audience. We announced the show last year but it's not the show we've ended up with.”

He also shared:

“She's had a very different year than the one she planned and it's quite unexpected, quite surprising, very moving and a powerful piece of television. We're just finishing it off at the moment that's due to come out on September and it's really interesting.”

The show was reshaped in the wake of tragedy—Gemma’s mother, Joan Collins, passed away peacefully in July 2026 after a tough six-month battle with pneumonia. Collins invites viewers into her personal heartbreak, transforming the documentary from entertainment to something, as Edgar-Jones put it:

“quite unexpected, quite surprising, very moving and a powerful piece of television.”

Gemma Collins: From Car Sales to “British Hun” Icon

Where did it all begin for Gemma Collins? Her journey started in Essex, not as a celebrity, but as a car saleswoman before she became a mainstay on The Only Way Is Essex from 2011 to 2019. She didn’t stop there; Collins went on to grace shows like I'm a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here!, Celebrity Big Brother, Celebs Go Dating, and Dancing on Ice. All the while, she built a business empire, including her very own Essex fashion boutique.

Online, she’s become a fixture of the so-called “British hun culture”—she’s also a source of many internet memes. Her relationship timeline is similarly headline-grabbing, with partner Rami Hawash proposing to her on three separate occasions: 25 December 2013, again in December 2021, and a Maldives moment in February 2024. The pair first crossed paths at the King William pub in Chigwell back in 2011, a true Essex love story.

But for all the bravado, Gemma’s ready to show the world her most vulnerable year. She teased this herself at the show’s initial launch:

“the most important year of my life” and “for the first time people will get to see the Gemma behind the GC.”

Fans Brace for a Powerful Ride

With the loss of her mum reshaping the narrative, the docuseries is no longer just a celebrity confession or a glamorous highlight reel. According to Edgar-Jones:

“She's had a very different year than the one she planned and it's quite unexpected, quite surprising, very moving and a powerful piece of television.”

If the trailers and media buzz are anything to go by, fans can expect both laughter and tears as Collins lays bare her hopes and heartbreak.

It’s not every day reality TV gets this real. As September nears, will viewers find themselves seeing the “GC” in a whole new light?
