The producer of the show, Dana Terrace, made the announcement on her Twitter account. Check out the Twitter thread below.

I'm bi! I want to write a bi character, dammit! Luckily my stubbornness paid off and now I am VERY supported by current Disney leadership.

As a bisexual herself, Dana Terrace had this idea since she started writing the series. She really wanted ‘queer kids’ in the cast. Until now, homosexual characters have appeared in Disney movies, but always as secondary characters such as in 2017's live-action remake of Beauty and the Beast and the police officer in the 2020 Pixar movie Onward released in March. The only exception is Pixar’s short film Out which was broadcasted on Disney+ in which the main character is homosexual.
