Prince William's new plans for his Duchy of Cornwall are very different from King Charles

When Charles became King, he passed down the Duchy of Cornwall, which could currently be in a legal battle to his eldest son, Prince William. In a recent interview, the new Duke of Cornwall has revealed he has big plans for the Duchy and they are very different from his father’s.

Prince William wants to ‘make a difference’ for his community and also plans to involve his three children, so they understand more about their country.

The Prince of Wales plans to help the homeless with a new housing scheme from Cornwall to Kent and his goal is to make his project ‘sustainable’. So what exactly is the new Duke of Cornwall going to do?

Prince William wants to end homelessness

In an interview with Sunday Times, Prince William revealed he wants to build social housing in his Duchy. His private estate is 130,000 acres and goes from Cornwall to Kent.

When asked what his plans were for his Duchy and whether or not he would offer affordable housing, he explained that was indeed his plan:

There is. Absolutely. Social housing. You’ll see that when it’s ready. I’m no policy expert, but I push it where I can.

Prince William then added that his main goal is to make sure the project is sustainable and lasts in the long run:

It’s all very well doing big gestures, but there’s no point if ... there’s no future to it.

Prince William is aware his comes from privilege

Prince William comes from a place of privilege being part of the Royal Family. During the interview, he does acknowledge that part of his life and admits he is ‘one of the most unlikely advocates for this cause’ since he grew up in palaces and has multiple homes.

To make sure his children understand the struggles others go through, he plans to involve them in the project, just like Prince William’s mother, Diana, had done with him. Indeed Diana had taken a young Prince William (11) to a homeless shelter to see how others live.

Speaking of his children, Prince William said:

When I left this morning, one of the things I was thinking was, ‘When is the right time to bring George or Charlotte or Louis to a homeless organisation?

He then explains that homelessness is a topic that is often brought up, during school runs or as they drive through the streets of London:

They will definitely be exposed to it. On the school run, we talk about what we see. When we were in London, driving backwards and forwards, we regularly used to see people sitting outside supermarkets and we’d talk about it.

Prince William’s project launched thanks to his and Princess Kate’s Royal Foundation, as reported by The Telegraph.

Prince William shared a video on his Instagram page that explains the goals of his new campaign. The Prince of Wales' campaign also extends past his Duchy of Cornwall and is a UK-wide program.
