Her break announcement was dramatically received, tabloids titled their articles with words such as ‘major shake-up’, ‘extended break’ or 'exit' But why was this announcement so surprising?

It might be because Susanna Reid has been part of the news broadcast world since 1994 and since the beginning of her career she has worked for major channels such as the BBC and ITV. It could also be due to the fact that since 2014 she has been on our screen every morning from 6 to 9 am.

Let’s have a look into why she is taking a break from GMB.

Susanna Reid announces break from GMB

On Wednesday 18 October 2023, Susanna Reid announced on air that she would be taking some time off her daily morning showGood Morning Britain.

Even though her announcement on TV made it clear that she would only leave for two weeks, tabloids made her break sound like a permanent exit. On Instagram she said:

HAVING A BREAK! Looking forward to a bit of time with the kids. Back after half-term

Susanna Reid’s personal choices

Susanna Reid has 3 children from a previous relationship she had with Dominic Cotton, a sports journalist. Together the couple has three sons, Sam, 21, Finn, 19 and Jack, 18.

Dominic Cotton and Susanna Reid were together for 14 years before they broke up in 2014. Since this break up, Reid has dated other people but has always remained private about it. However, Reid has opened up about her desire not to marry.

In 2021 she explained on Good Morning Britain:

It was a personal choice. It's a bit of an old-fashioned idea that children are 'illegitimate' if you're not married. Children are legitimate, whether you're married or not!

When interviewed by The Sun about her relationship she said:

I've never wanted it. I’ve never fantasised about the big day. It was never my ambition to be married.

Since the announcement of her half-term break, ITV hasn’t revealed who will be stepping in to replace her.
