Born in 1982 in the Caribbean, Nicki Minaj's name is actually Onika Tanya Maraj. She began her studies with the goal of becoming an actress at Laguardia High School, a school of music and art in Manhattan. Once graduated, the star then totally changed her field. She released 3 mixtapes between 2007 and 2009: Playtime Is Over, Sucka Free and Beam Me Up Scotty, sold 1 million copies of the latter and then signed with the famous record label Young Money. A feat for an artist from the underground district of Queens.
