1. Location: Guam is located in the middle of the Pacific Ocean and is considered a U.S. territory. It's part of the Mariana's Islands which consists of 4 other islands that are all part of the U.S. territory. Guam's population is about 170,000.
2. Inhabitants: The native inhabitants are the Chamorro people. Now, the population includes a diverse crowd from the Philippines, Micronesia, Other Eastern Asian Countries, and North Americans. The country has a rich Spanish history dating back from the 1500s. It was first explored by Ferdinand Magellan but was not officially colonized until the 17th century.
3. US Involvement: The U.S. Military built a strategic air force base back in 1944. Andersen Air Force base is located in Northern Guam. Guam also has a U.S. Naval Base located in Southern Guam. There are about 12,000 military personnel and their families living on Guam.
4. Mariana's trench: The deepest part of the world's ocean is called the Mariana's trench! The depth is about 10,994 meters! It's located near Guam.
5. World War II: There are several historic bunker sites still left behind from WWII This famous site is called Fort Soledad.
6. Latte Stones: The Latte stones are considered a symbol of the Chamorro culture. They are pillars made from limestone and sandstone.
7. Tourism: There are amazing tourist attractions and stone structures on Guam. After all, a majority of the economy comes from tourism!
8. Brown Tree Snakes: The Brown Tree snake is an invasive animal that arrived on island from military cargo. The snakes attacked a majority of the birds on the island. It is very rare to hear birds chirping in the morning!
9. Guam Rail Birds: There is a small island called Cocos Island that you can visit. They used this island to help re-establish the endemic Guam Rail birds.
10. Mount Lam Lam: Mount Lamlam is the highest mountain in the world starting from sea depth to the top of the peak.
11. Food: The Chamorros are well-known for their delicious barbecue meals! Pork, chicken, and red rice is favoured by everyone. However, in today's world - the food is heavily influenced by surrounding countries nearby such as the Philippines, Japan, and Southeast Asia.
