How do you properly water your cactus?

Cacti do not always need the same amount of water during certain times of the year. For example, during fall and winter, a cactus doesn't require much water. The reason? At this time of year, it grows more slowly and it is enough to water it only once every three weeks. (Talk about minimal effort!)

On the other hand, a cactus can grow exceptionally in the spring and summer thanks to the high temperatures and sunshine. Therefore it needs more water and should be watered about once a week.

How do you know when your cactus needs water?

It can be easy to forget that your cactus does need water, considering they are already a very low maintenance plant. However, they can, in fact, be thirsty. We'll give you a few tips on how you can spot when your cactus is craving some hydration or not.

During the winter they usually require almost no water. Watering only helps to counteract the complete drying out of the soil and the roots. How can you tell when this is happening? The soil around the cactus becomes extremely dry and it can begin to change colour.

How do you care for a cactus in winter?

With the drop in temperature, it is not always easy to keep a cactus in good health. Too much moisture in the soil and air is not good for cactuses. Why? It can actually lead to the rotting of the cacti's roots and stems.

In order to make the transition from summer to winter easier, reduce the frequency of watering starting in the fall and suspend it completely for cacti that are resistant to temperatures of -12° C degrees. Other cacti can be watered once a month.

How do you choose the right cactus?

Since cactuses are back in fashion, you will find an enormous selection of plants in the nurseries. They vary in all shapes and sizes, but which type is best for that trendy jungle look?

If you are looking for a big cactus for the decorative sofa corner, the species Euphorbia is the best choice. For a more minimalist decor, use small cacti like Parodia or Mammillaria.

What is the difference between cacti and succulents?

Cacti are often confused with succulents, these popular indoor plants that sprout in dry environments. Cacti have areoles, small outgrowths from which thorns grow. But you have to be careful because some cacti are also thorny succulents. Cacti or succulents without thorns are often called fatty plants.
