Russian President Vladimir Putin blames President Zelenskyy peace talks

Vladimir Putin launched his full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 and has since been in and out of headlines as stories about his leadership shock the rest of the world. Recently, there have been wild rumours about him suffering an alleged cardiac arrest circulating online. However, some think these were started by Moscow officials to gauge how Russians would react to the news and punish those who reacted with joy.

Now, Putin seems to be leading with full force as he has issued a new baffling statement about Russia’s war against Ukraine. He has blamed the Ukrainian President Zelenskyy or drawing out the fighting, claiming that Russia has always been open to finding a peaceful solution.

Putin says Russia open to ‘peace talks’

The Russian President, known for his vicious leadership of Russia, has said that Moscow is ready for the war in Ukraine to end. In a virtual G20 meeting yesterday, on Wednesday 22 November, Putin stated his surprising opinion:

Military actions are always a tragedy. And of course, we should think about how to stop this tragedy.

He went on to say that ‘Russia has never refused peace talks with Ukraine’, implying that it is Zelenskyy’s fault that both sides of the conflict are still losing lives. For context, Zelensky signed a decree back in October 2022 which declared that peace talks between Ukraine and Russia are ‘impossible’.

This comes as a Putin ally issued a bitter threat to Zelenskyy.

Putin ally threatens Zelenskyy

Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has issued a recent assassination threat to Zelenskyy. He has said that the Ukrainian President is ‘unlikely to have chance of living to old age’.

This was in reaction to Zelenskyy telling the British tabloid The Sun that he has survived five or six assassination attempts at the orders of Putin. Zelenskyy’s words were stingingly dismissive:

The first one is very interesting, when it is the first time, and after that it is just like Covid.

It’s clear than tensions between the two countries remain extremely high, despite Putin’s apparent newfound desire to end the war.
