In the US, this trick is currently used frequently and many people are cheated out of their money. If you're called and an unfamiliar voice (not your hard-of-hearing aunt) asks, "Hello, can you hear me?", then do not answer under any circumstances. The tricksters record the conversation, and if you answer "yes," they can use the answer to make phone transactions, such as at your bank.
The best thing to do is to not answer at all or to pretend that the connection is bad and ask for the name of the caller. Then you'll be able to tell if it's a fraudster or genuinely someone you know.
