Nurses have voted to strike over pay this winter in a landmark move as 300,000 members were balloted by the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) in the first vote on industrial action in the union's 106-year history.

All nurses have been offered a pay rise of at least £1400 next year, representing an increase of between 4% and 5%, but health unions have rejected this. They have stated they want a rise that goes with inflation - currently around 10% - whilst the RCN have requested inflation plus 5%, as per The Guardian.
The strike will leave many hospitals running a bank holiday service, which is likely to impact thousands of patients. There will be delays in routine treatment, operations and chemotherapy however emergency care will not be affected, as per the Daily Mail.
Impact on patients
Addressing concerns about the impact on patient healthcare, RCN general secretary Pat Cullen said:
We don’t intend to place any patient at further risk during the strike. We will manage that safely and effectively.
Industrial action is predicted to start before Christmas, with reports it will take place over two dates. This means that people's healthcare will become a kind of postcode lottery as not all unions are striking so there will be varying degrees of service across the country.
Whilst the unions insist people’s lives won’t be at risk, not everybody agrees, with one senior health insider responding, as per the Daily Mail:
Everything from routine blood tests, mammograms, smear tests, colonoscopies, skin biopsies, X-rays will come to a halt if routine treatment is cancelled. They're all considered as non-emergency but everything is crucial when it comes to healthcare, including preventative action
