Friday the 13th: Buying a house with the unlucky number could save you over £5000

Real estate can be confusing and a bit random but turns out that superstition also plays a part in how much housing costs.

Indeed, it is commonly understood that when a Friday occurs on the 13th day of the month, bad things happen. While there is no proof that this is actually true, it is impossible to stop the stereotype that number 13 brings bad luck.

This fear of the number 13 has a huge place in people’s minds and even has a name: Triskaidekaphobia. Because of it, some even refuse to attend dinners if the number of guests will be 13. It does make sense that this would lead to an impact on how people buy property.

Number 13 helps you save money

If you’re looking to buy property, chances are you didn’t pay attention to the number of your house. You probably looked at the number of bedrooms and bathrooms, the size of the kitchen, etc. But think again.

According to a new study from Rightmove, the UK’s number one app for finding property,

houses numbered 13 have the lowest average value.

For the purposes of their study, Rightmove has looked at the value of more than 10 million properties in the UK. They have found that houses numbered 13 average at £354,793 while other houses average at £360,126.

That means that buying a house numbered 13 could save you around £5333.

Number 1 is more expensive

At the other end of the spectrum you have houses numbered 1. According to Rightmove, these are the most expensive. Same goes for houses with the ‘lucky’ number 7.

These superstitions also impact how new housing is built. Edward Thomson, who works in real estate, say that it is common for developers to skip number 13 in order to ‘remove the element of superstition.’

Thomson added:

If living at number 13 doesn't faze you, it is possible you could find yourself buying against a smaller proportion of the market and therefore do a better deal - but only if you're lucky of course.
Owners of number 13 properties may find that it adds a unique aspect to their home given there are not as many around, and it could even be a conversation starter with the next owner when the time comes to sell.
