After two contestants were caught sharing this item on-screen, some viewers were left horrified when questioning the hygiene implications involved in this form of girl-bonding.
One health expert, Natika H Halil from the sexual health charity FPA, spoke to Fabulous Digital to warn viewers of the consequences of copying this villa trend off-screen.
“Most sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including HIV, chlamydia, syphilis, gonorrhoea, genital warts and genital herpes, can’t be passed on” through sharing this one item however, “certain STIs…could be passed from one wearer to the next”.
Current islanders, Amber and Molly-Mae, are at the core of the controversy. Ellie Brown and Rosie Williams sparked outrage after appearing to do the same thing last year despite the obvious health risks.
