The history of Domino’s logo

As reported by Logaster, Domino’s was initially called Dominick's Pizza. During the 1960s it was purchased by businessman Tom Monaghan. Being the new owner of the pizza joint, he had to come up with a new branding for it.

According to legend, it was one of the pizza delivery guys who suggested the name Domino’s and it just stuck.

The first logo of the brand was designed in 1965. The original logo of the brand had almost the same logo that we see today, except both the dominoes were coloured red. They are square with rounded edges. In 1977, this logo was revamped with sharper edges and bolder colours.

The logo we see now comes from the redesign in 2013 when the dominoes were made blue and red in colour with rounded edges and the word ‘Domino’s’ written below the logo in light blue.

The reason for the 3 dots

The logo of Domino’s contains two white dots on the blue domino and a single white dot on the red domino. These dots actually represent the original three locations of the pizza chain.

Apparently, the initial idea was to add a new dot for every new location opened. However, with the success of the brand, and thousands of Domino’s restaurants that have opened across the world, it was clearly not a feasible thing to do, and the original number of dots stayed.
