An anonymous woman on Reddit’s famous threadAm I the A****le? shared her incredible story. She asked if she was in the wrong for refusing to give her engagement ring back to the family of her fiancé after he tragically passed away.

Let’s see what this story is about.

A custom engagement ring

The woman who is asked to give her ring back explains the story behind her ring. She writes:

Since his family doesn't have any heirlooms or family jewels, he had a goldsmith craft a wedding ring specially for me.

However, the ring not being a family ‘heirloom’ didn’t stop the mom and sister of the late groom-to-be, to ask for the ring back.

According to them, the ring should be returned to his family as they are his ‘real family.

The woman writing on Reddit shares how challenging the situation is because on one hand she is able to understand the family of her late fiancé but on the other she can’t quite grasp why they would want a ring that was especially made for her.

She explains:

Don't get me wrong, if it were a family jewel or family heirloom, I'd not hesitate do give it back. But it isn't.

A divisive issue

This story is more polarising than you might think. In the comments under her Reddit post, people are debating.

The grieving woman explains that ‘some people say that the ring is rightfully’ hers since her partner had it made for their five year anniversary.

But others point out that the ring symbolises a promise that will never be fulfilled. Some users even accuse the woman of keeping something that belonged to her fiancé from his family.

It can be argued that since the ring was given to her as a sign of their engagement the ring was never meant for the groom’s family. This is an argument that Reddit users seem to agree with writing:

The ring was a gift from your late fiance to you. His family has no absolutely no right to claim ownership of your ring. Block them if you need to.

According to Twitter, people asking for engagement rings back is not a new thing. This user shared their story:
