A tragic scene as angry villagers cause elephants to run for their lives

In the Bankura district in India, the human-elephant conflict continues to rise. Everyday is a deadly struggle as both try to fight for their lives.

A photo that was taken by Biplab Hazra showed a baby elephant that was set on fire by a large group of people. No one really knows what exactly happened but the photo itself does a phenomenal job exhibiting the daily struggles for both humans and elephants.

The photo was given an award by the Sanctuary magazine. They said 'this sort of humiliation is routine'. They also explained that the photo depicted the real-life human-elephant conflict. The incident was horrific and the crowd of people ended up throwing flaming tar balls and crackers at the two elephants because they were attacking the locals. The photo also attracted a lot of attention on social media due to the violence and daily struggles.

Another villager, Mainak Mazumder mentioned that both parties are to blame - the villagers living in the district caused habitat destruction but the elephants living there also destroyed all the land and killed a lot of innocent people along the way. This conflict is an ongoing struggle for the people of India.
