Striving for normality

According to the BBC, the Earl and Countess of Wessex decided not to use HRH titles for their children to avoid 'the burdens' associated with them. The Wessexes wanted to give their children a grounded upbringing.

“Mummy, people at school keep telling me that Granny is the Queen”…In an exclusive interview, the Countess of Wessex chats to Louise about trying to give her children a normal upbringing and how she’s about to take on a new challenge.

Sophie, Countess of Wessex, told the BBC:

Only because for their sakes, to grow up as normally as possible we felt was quite important.

Lady Louise was the youngest granddaughter of the late Queen Elizabeth, although she had no idea that she was related to royalty.

MyLondon reports that Lady Louise only made the connection between her grandmother and the Queen after the children at her school told her. The countess recalls Lady Louise saying:

Mummy, people keep on telling me that grandma is the Queen.

Sophie explained that the realisation was a 'complete shock to the system' for Lady Louise. The countess clarifies:

When they are with the Queen, she is their grandmother.

Not the only Royal not to make the connection

The Mirror reports that Prince Edward also didn't fully comprehend that his mother and the reigning monarch were the same person. He doesn't recall when the realisation happened, but he guessed it was around the age of 5 or 6.

He said:

When you grow up in that family and in that environment, that’s just what your parents do.

According to Hello!, a young Prince Harry also didn't make the connection between his grandmother and the Queen. The publication reveals that a courtier announced that the Queen would arrive at teatime.
