Mike, who is a former professional rugby player, has been in the media limelight many times. From a popular appearance in I’m a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here, to talking about what it’s like to be a part of the royal family, he loves to get candid about things happening in his life. Most recently, Mike opened up about what it felt like to lose a child with Zara. Here’s what he said.

Mike talks about his losses

While marrying into the royal family to Zara was a big win for Mike, the couple has faced monumental losses during the course of their marriage. The couple have had two miscarriages so far, a horrible event also experienced by swimmer Rebecca Adlington. Mike finally broke the silence about these losses, as he got upfront about the babies he couldn’t watch grow up for the first time. In conversation with The Times, Mike said the following about their loss as a family.

It's a terrible journey for mothers as they look at themselves like it's their fault.

He also said:

(Suffering a miscarriage) is difficult when you first go through it and being as late as it was - five months.

Mike’s current family life

Mike and Zara enjoy a great family life at the moment, with three healthy children. Mia Grace is 9 years old, Lena Elizabeth is 4, and their last-born son Lucas Philip is two. But, the couple lost two babies between the period of Mia’s and Lena’s birth. The couple is very sad to have lost two of their own, despite enjoying every moment with their kids. As per The Express, Mike also said the following.

We had to go out there and tell everyone we had lost a baby... The life we lead means we had to announce it publicly. It’s a terrible journey for mothers; they look at themselves like it’s their fault.

The hardest part

While enduring a miscarriage is terrible, the harder part was to announce it publicly. In fact, a teary-eyed Zara has opened up about how it felt on BBC Breakfast when she said the following.

I think that's the hardest thing in our situation, is that everyone knew. And very much when things like that happen, normally it's just your family and friends, but unfortunately, everyone knew about it.
Actually I had so many letters saying 'I'm so sorry, we've been through the same thing", which was incredible - and thank you to all those people.'
It's very different for us because we're carrying the child, but for guys, I guess it's kind of that helpless feeling, which must be incredibly high and horrible for them.

The silver lining

Despite enduring so much pain, the couple chooses to remain positive and look at the bright side of things. Mike revealed that the best thing about this was that the couple didn’t lose their first child. And he had an extra hand to hold when things looked dark. As per The Express, he said the following about his painful experience that was made better by their daughter Mia.

To get home from the hospital and Mia is there with a smile on her face, you put all your love into her.
If we’d have gone home to an empty house, that would have been a completely different scenario.
