The two artists have a turbulent relationship which ended up in ‘Bad Blood’. After their romance brewed in 2009, the pair was spotted many times together enjoying dinners. However, their romantic involvement soon fizzled out.

The post-breakup era

Swift, who was just 19 at the time, soon released a song called ‘Dear John’. The song's lyrics are:

Dear John, I see it all; now it was wrong / Don't you think 19 is too young / To be played by your dark, twisted games when I loved you so? / I should've known

As per US Weekly, Mayer reacted badly to this at an interview, saying that it was a lousy thing to do, and that it made him feel terrible. Mayer soon came out with ‘Paper Doll’ which was allegedly a diss track aimed at Swift.

And ever since then, it has been a whole pattern of name-calling, subliminal hints through music, and throwing shade at each other.

The most recent shot fired

Swift’s new EP Midnights just came out, and Swifties have been going wild ever since. The main reason being the alleged jab the ‘Red’ singer took at Mayer, in her song ‘Would’ve, Could’ve, Should’ve’. The song supposedly expresses her regret when it comes to dating Mayer.

As per Elle, the lyrics are:

At nineteen, and the god's honest truth is that the pain was heaven / And now that I'm grown, I'm scared of ghosts / God rest my soul / I miss who I used to be.

She also apparently referenced him taking away her innocence:

Give me back my girlhood, it was mine first.
